What You Need to Know: Doing Your Make-Up on Your Big Day

With so many resources out there, it’s no wonder why so many brides are doing more and more of their wedding planning themselves. If you love doing your own makeup, there’s no reason to hire a stylist for your big day. Here are some tips to follow if you’re going to do your own wedding makeup.

Prep Your Skin Ahead of Time

In order to ensure that your wedding day makeup goes on seamlessly, it’s important to start preparing your skin well in advance.

• In preparation for your wedding day, wear a ton of lip balm during the day and at night. You want your lips to be as moisturized as possible when applying lipstick.

• Tone your skin before applying the makeup. Toner will dissolve dead skin cells, ensuring that your makeup goes on evenly.

Choose a Photo for Inspiration

Go through wedding magazines and books to find a makeup style that you love. This will make it a lot easier to recreate your ideal wedding day look.

Spend a Lot of Time on the Base

Spend a lot of time doing your base makeup. It’s important to start with a perfect complexion before adding anymore makeup. Take time to perfect the concealer, foundation, powder, blush and bronzer. Here are some tips for getting the base just right:

• Apply foundation with your fingers. Use a circular motion from your face down to your neck.

• Use concealer on a blush on any parts of your skin where there’s darkness.

Pay extra attention to the underage areas of your skin, as well as any red spots and around the nose.

• Wherever you want a bit of light on your face, add some highlighter.

• Set all of the base makeup using loose powder.

• When you’re ready to apply bronzer, apply it using a “3” motion, as though you were drawing the number on your face. Start at the hairline to add some warmth to the frame of your face, then apply bronzer to your forehead, followed by the face’s perimeter and underneath the cheekbone. Then, apply a bit below the jawline. Start with a small amount and then build if necessary.

• Now it’s time for blush! You want the blush to be on the apples of your cheeks. Apply it two-fingers distance from your nose so that you don’t get any redness where you don’t want it. To finish it off, make a small checkmark motion at the cheekbone.

Take Care of a Blemish

If you have an unsightly pimple, you may not have time to get rid of it before the big day. Luckily, makeup will help you cover it up. Put foundation on the blemish and then use some matte concealer to hide it even more. Set the makeup with powder. Still don’t have enough coverage? Do another layer of concealer and powder. Also, remember to pat the concealer on instead of rubbing it in.

Make Your Eye Makeup Look Natural

To make your eye makeup look natural, use an eyeshadow base to keep the eyeshadow in place. Before applying eyeshadow, you’ll want to brighten the area with some concealer, if you haven’t done it already. Use a light shadow all over the eye and then a medium color in the crease. Take some more eyeshadow and add it to the cover of the eyes for extra oomph.

You can’t do everything on your own for your wedding day. You won’t be able to sew your own dress or bake your own cake. However, if you have a knack for doing makeup, get it exactly the way you want it by doing it yourself.
